Boutique Azibi came into being in the mid 70’s on the beach called Cala D’Hort on the southwestern tip of the island of Ibiza, Spain.  At that time, Cala D’Hort Beach had no decent road access and there were no buses making the long trek over bad dirt roads full of potholes and absent of road signs. The beach was mainly populated  by fishermen, local Ibicencan families and a growing number of foreign and Spanish home owners living along the western coast of the island who owned their own boats.  Sundays during the summer became a day to boat over to Cala D’Hort beach, anchor for the day, contemplate the mystical and impressive view of the two rocks, Es Vedra and Vedranell, swim and snorkel in the crystalline turquoise waters and dine at one of the two excellent fish huts on each end of the beach.  Each hut was run by a local Ibicencan family from the area with their own recipe for paella and their own personality.  Both grilled delicious fresh fish caught that day nearby and both were always full. To this day, electricity and running water have yet to reach this remote side of the island.  Everything in the vicinity runs on solar energy, generators and nearby underground water sources.

A young American couple renting a house up the hill from the beach was designing kimonos out of old silk saris to sell at the “hippy market” once a week on the other side of the island.  The boat people and the local people began asking to see the silk clothing, and slowly, the “private showings” became more and more regular and began involving friends who made silver jewelry, bikinis and other unique clothing.   Soon, it was decided that these showings needed shelter from the sun.  Four strong bamboo poles were mounted in a corner of the beach and an ornate brocaded Indian tapestry was strung between the poles to give shade to the contents and the customers.  An old mirror framed in bamboo hung from one corner.  Carpets from Afganisthan as well as local straw mats kept the sand contained.  A makeshift closet was constructed from an old wooden shipping crate and remained all season packed with all the exotic wares.  Every morning, we came to the beach, opened the “closet” and slowly began hanging and displaying the floating fabrics for sale, until the image was of a colorful, bohemian shop on the beach.  See photos.

As all good things seem to have to come to an end, eventually the roads to Cala D’Hort improved, then became asphalted and finally paved.  The beach has become well known and crowded, catering now not only to the boat people and the brave souls who had ventured in by car, but to teams of tourists clutching in hand one of the many Ibiza guide books which all recommend the spectacular views and  the fine dining available  on Cala D’Hort.  Along the way to fame, the beach attracted the attention of those in control of permits and licences.  Both fish huts were required to rebuild a certain number of meters back from the sea line and both became full-fledged restaurants.  One of the restaurant built 10 rooms on the 2nd floor to rent out in the summer.  The “private showings” shaded area was required to become an official boutique with an actual building (bamboo and glass) and permits.   Since 1989, Boutique Azibi has assumed its place in the center of the beach, just above the string of small fishing huts still remaining in their original condition.

Currently,  Boutique Azibi opens around Easter each year and closes by the end of September.  We offer a choice selection of resort clothing, swimwear, sandals, beach wraps (pareos), bags and jewelry priced from 1 Euro to 150 Euros.   Many of the clothing lines we offer are designed and made on the island.  Others are designed by some of our island friends who travel to the Orient during the winter and have their lines produced overseas.  The island of Ibiza has long led the fashion world in its flair of the “hippy chic” mode, reflecting the freedom, beauty and joy of nature mixed with a relaxed island life.  We maintain a high quality of merchandise and a wide range of unique and stylish articles in order to do justice in representing our beloved island of Ibiza and especially the majesty of Es Vedra and Vedranell, always just offshore, silently keeping watch on us mortals with our fancy worldy playthings and the many games we play.
